Category-based draws are now a key part of Express Entry.

Instead of only ranking candidates by CRS, IRCC invites those who meet specific economic priorities set by the Minister.

Recent tightening:

You must have 12 months of relevant work experience within the past 3 years to qualify

2026 categories include:

French-language proficiency

Healthcare and social services

STEM

Trades

Education

Transport

Physicians (Canadian experience)

Senior managers (Canadian experience)

Researchers (Canadian experience)

Skilled military recruits

What this means:

It still comes down to CRS.

But category-based draws usually have much lower cut-offs

Strategy: Qualify for a category by gain a relavent foregin WE

Before

37 | Married | Master’s (Canada) | CLB 9 | No French | 3y foreign + 1y Canadian experience

Spouse: Master’s + 2y Canadian + CELPIP 8

CRS: 496 → low chance in regular CRS selection

After

38 (CRS drops slightly)

12 months targeted work experience (e.g. social work → healthcare category)

CRS: 491

Strong chance in category-based draws

Key insight:

You don’t always need a higher CRS; you need to be in the right draw.
