As of May 30, Ontario has updated the framework of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program under O. Reg. 421/17. This is not simply a cancellation of existing streams, but the foundation for a broader redesign.

Ontario now has the authority to create, modify, or remove streams, and to move toward a more targeted, labour market–driven selection model.

A common concern I am hearing is straightforward:
What happens to applications already submitted?

The answer is equally straightforward, according to the OINP website:

Applications submitted prior to the change will continue to be assessed based on the criteria in place at the time of submission.

This is critical.

For applicants already in process, this is not a disruption of eligibility, but a continuation under the existing rules.

The uncertainty lies elsewhere.

At present:
The previous intake pathways are no longer open
The new structure has not yet been fully released
There is no clear guidance on how existing EOI profiles will be treated

The prior system is no longer accepting new applications, while the new system is still taking shape.

That said, the direction is not difficult to read.

Ontario is moving toward a more targeted selection model, with greater emphasis on specific occupations, closer alignment with labour market needs, and increased employer involvement.

For prospective applicants, timing matters less than understanding that direction.

For those already in process, the takeaway remains simple:
your application continues under the rules that applied when it was filed.
