Reports suggest that Bill C-12 (Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act) could receive Royal Assent as early as March 2026.
Here’s what you need to know 👇
🔹 New asylum limits
• “1-Year Rule” – Some claims made more than one year after first entry may not go to a full hearing
• “14-Day Rule” – Certain irregular entries from the U.S. may face stricter timelines
🔹 Faster asylum processing
Enhanced screening before cases are referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board
🔹 Expanded government powers
Authority to suspend or cancel immigration documents in the public interest
🔹 More information sharing
Improved coordination between federal and provincial partners, with privacy safeguards
Important: Pre-Removal Risk Assessment (PRRA) access would still remain available in eligible cases.
If passed, this could significantly reshape Canada’s asylum landscape in 2026. Early awareness and strategic planning will be key.
