Why Is It Important to Track Your Travel History in Canada?
For permanent residents, travel history is essential when applying for a PR card renewal or Canadian citizenship. Both processes have strict physical presence requirements.
To maintain PR status, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within a 5 year period. For citizenship, the requirement is 1,095 days within the same timeframe.
For this reason, it is important to keep a clear and accurate record of all trips outside Canada.
This is not only relevant for PRs.
For individuals who are not yet immigrants, such as spouses of PRs or Canadian citizens, travel history can be important in future family class applications. Records of visits can help demonstrate the genuineness of the relationship.
In my practice, some applicants do not maintain proper records of their visits to Canada. As a result, they may need to prepare detailed explanation letters to reconstruct their travel history.
Maintaining accurate records is a simple habit that can help avoid unnecessary complications in future applications.
